MANHATTAN PARKS AND THE GATES

New York's parks -- large and small -- keep its citizens sane. In the hurly-burly that is life in the big city, these oases of nature offer an escape from tensions and the gift of beauty and tranquillity. For two weeks in February, 2005, Christo's Gates -- 7,500 steel and saffron-fabric structures that wound their way through the park -- also brought a historic art happening to Central Park, attracting millions of visitors from New York and around the world.
